Irish jockey Mikey Fogarty has been ruled out of Saturday’s Grand National after fracturing his spine in a fall during the Topham Chase on Friday.Fogarty had been due to ride Vesper Bell in the famous steeplechase at Aintree but will remain in hospital.

Three other jockeys with National rides were also injured in the Topham, which is raced over Grand National fences.Andrew Tinkler has been passed fit, with Paul Carberry and Noel Fehily waiting for a doctor’s check.

Carberry, who won the big race in 1999 on Bobbyjo and is due to ride Monbeg Dude in Saturday’s National, was taken to hospital for precautionary X-rays on a possible pelvic injury, but released later on Friday.Fehily, who is scheduled to partner Rocky Creek hurt an elbow while Tinkler, who will ride Hunt Ball, banged a wrist. All four missed subsequent rides.

Fogarty fell at the seventh on Bishopsfurze, while Carberry was unseated from Kauto Stone at the eighth fence.Tinkler’s mount, Tanks For That, fell at the 12th and Fehily came down at the 15th on Fago.No horses were injured during Friday’s race, which was won by Ma Filleule, completing a hat-trick of wins on the day for the combination of jockey Barry Geraghty and trainer Nicky Henderson.

Last month at Cheltenham the David Pipe-trained 11-year-old, having his first run for a year, finished an eye-catching third in a Grade Three handicap and yesterday the two in front of him that day, the winner Holywell and Ma Filleule, both romped home, by an aggregate 18 lengths. The Package was immediately cut from 20-1 to 16-1 for the National.

Ma Filleule was particularly impressive in the Topham Trophy over two and three-quarter miles of the National course, taking to the unique fences with aplomb. But the contest took a toll on jockeys, with Paul Carberry, Noel Fehily, Andrew Tinkler and Mikey Fogarty – all with National mounts – suffering injuries.

Carberry, taken to hospital for precautionary X-rays on his pelvis, is still likely to be able to partner Monbeg Dude, one of the National favourites. Fehily (Rocky Creek) and Tinkler (Hunt Ball) were both treated on course and both should be fit for today. But Fogarty, who suffered a back injury and also left the course in an ambulance, may miss his ride on Vesper Bell. None of the 10 horses who fell or unseated their rider in the Topham was injured.
